SEE: LANEWAY FESTIVAL 2017

This year Laneway Festival will be held in Albert Park in Auckland (right next to us folks at the Central Library!). It'll be a nice change from the ultra damaging heat at Silo Park...lots of tree's and grass...Yay!! And if I was going this year (cough, cough) then this is who I would be heading to see...

YOUNG THUG

Young Thug is a massively prolific american rapper who hails from Atlanta, Georgia (so much good hip-hop coming out of Atlanta at the moment, and pretty much always...lol). I've always enjoyed the way that he uses his voice with the music. Sometimes he shouts, or slurs, or he breaks up every annunciation so he creates this hectic beat with his syllables , that everything turns into metaphysical poetry with a mass amount of slang...haha...RAD. This was one of the first songs I ever heard of his and i've never gotten over it, even though he has released like 3 mixtapes since this 2015 release which this song featured on.

THE CHILLS

I don't think I need to write up an introduction for The Chills...I'll just say, they are rad and Martin Phillip's songs are the business...I wouldn't miss it...this is my all time fav...

TAME IMPALA

Australian band Tame Impala have been around awhile now, and are one band I'm dying to see live...like right up the front kind of live...especially cause their sound is so well developed that I'd like to see them work their amps and pedal's live....this song was released about a year ago, and I've never quite gotten over this video...hypnotized/very amused...

WHITE LUNG

At some point at any festival I like to go nuts and let loose, and this is by far the best band to "go nuts" to..haha. White Lung are a Canadian punk rock band from Vancouver. They've been around since 2006 and came from a whole 'Nu Sensae' and 'Mac DeMarco' group of musicians...

KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD

This is my wild card pick. I didn't know anything about this band and had only been told about them recently (by numerous amounts of people). I've been listening to a few of their songs online and they are buzzy AF...King Gizzard are a Melbourne psychedelic band...there's an impressive list of instruments that they use in their albums including a theremin, sitar and ZURNA (a wind instrument). This is one of their live performances that I found online...lookin pretty good...

The Laneway Festival is coming up on 1 February, so here's a few picks on who to see (or, if you're not going, then it's also a nice way to discover some new acts).

It's tempting to start with Courtney Barnett, since she took over the main stage last year with her grab-you-by-the-throat heavy rock live sound - somewhat surprising since she's more known on record for her witty lyrics. However, we just sang her praises a few posts ago, so let's go to the opposite end of the noise spectrum and instead start with one of our own emerging female musicians, Nadia Reid ...

Nadia Reid's latest album, Listen to formation, look for the signs, received a 7.2 rating on music-nerd website Pitchfork and she will no doubt provide a wonderful afternoon respite from the noisier bands at Laneway, especially for those who are fans of Aldous Harding and Tiny Ruins.

Let's keep it local with our next pick, the solo project of Kody Neilson (former singer of The Mint Chicks and colloborator/partner with Bic Runga). His live show features a DJ with a large robotic head and Kody isn't shy of performing (when he played in the sedate surroundings of Newsworthy, he still got up on the presenter's table and danced in their faces). This is the first single of his album, Personal computer:

Moving on to the overseas acts, it's hard to go past Beach House, who shocked many fans last year by releasing two albums quickly on the heels of one another - Depression Cherry and Thank your lucky stars. Most of it is fairly mid-tempo, but they're bound to sound huge on the main stage - hopefully as the day cools and the sun begins to set. This song will make it seem like the whole festival is taking place within a David Lynch movie...

Now let's pick up the pace a bit with DIIV, whose sound manages to take the shoegaze approach of My Bloody Valentine and Ride, but crank up the tempo a little bit. Their first album, Oshin, was their breakthrough release and here's the lead single off it:

You'd think from the above acts that Laneway is just all about indie rock, though this year there's some big hitters from the hip hop world as well - Vince Staples and The Internet. Though for many the biggest drawcard will be the odd pop music of Grimes, who injected some art school experimentation into her last release, Art Angels. Since she'll probably close out the night at Laneway, it seems only right to let her have the last word here as well:

Bespin

A little somewhat unknown band from Auckland, who describe themselves as having an 'ambivalent' sound. They have a hazy, groove-based shoegaze sound.

Connan Mockasin

A psychedelic pop artist from Te Awan. Produces some very quirky and tasteful music videos and has a quiet, yet toned vocal style. Connan is an introverted and unique artist who will likely prove one to watch at Laneway 2015.

Laneways Here We Come

The 2011 Laneways Festival line-up was just announced.  Being held on Auckland Anniversary Day (31 January 2011) at the re-christened Aotea Square, this year's announced line-up are: Yeasayer - Foals -Ladyhawke - !!! (CHK CHK CHK) - Deerhunter - Blonde Redhead -Children's Hour - Warpaint - Beach House - Ariel Pink's Haunted GraffitiLawrence Arabia - Holy F*** - An Emerald City.
Acts I'm looking forward to seeing:
This an indie heavyweight line-up for sure, but it does omit lots of great artists that are on the Australian leg of the tour.  Why couldn't Auckland get the insanely amazing Les Savy Fav,  Los Angeles upstarts Local Natives, skewed popsters Menomena, and the cutesy duo of Jenny and Johnny?  Yes, I'll end up going and will probably enjoy myself in the sun(fingers crossed) and sonics of Aotea Square. Although one has to ask, when does Auckland begin to not get the short end of the stick when it comes to Laneways?  Just saying.
